The arrival of Information Technology in our lives has revolutionized everything, from our professions to our living standards, which includes health, entertainment and last but not the least, our education. Through the advent of new technology, education has become a lot more interactive, informative and collaborative. Although competition has reached a higher peak all around the world due to this change, we get brighter minds equipped with the modern knowledge as a result.
In the bygone days, people, mostly scholars, used to travel to different parts of the world to gain knowledge form others, and to share their knowledge with other people. People used to travel to far-flung areas to quench their thirst of knowledge. Only a few libraries were present in far off countries. Therefore, people used to travel to these libraries in order to gain benefit from them.
Due to the information technology, every sort of information is present on the World Wide Web. This is a wonder in itself, because you can access knowledge, and information on any topic, some of which you could never even imagine to know. It is very easy to find book of competent authors, research papers, publications, and any other thing that you can only think of.
There are many big and famous universities of the world, such as Harvard, Cambridge, Yale, and UCL, which are collaborating with each other for the purpose of research. This is only possible because of the high quality, and bandwidth networks between these universities. All the researchers can interact with each other with the help of the facility of video conferencing. It is very easy to share the study material. There is also no need to travel to any country in order to benefit, or access a particular book. All this has been made possible because of the IT networks all around the world.
Through the IT networks, students benefit from the video lectures that are delivered online on different topics. This feature has contributed a lot in improving the state of education because, now students from all around the world can benefit from the lectures of famous lecturers at a very minimum cost.
Introduction of IP networks has introduced another concept called the distance learning or distance education. By definition, it means providing education to students who are not physically present at the site through technology, and instructional systems design. It is an education system created to suite the requirements of students to get these lectures outside of their classrooms. The technologies used in this system may be synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous requires the on-site and timely presence of students, where the lecturer is being delivered. In asynchronous type, the students can access the online course material and can view it anytime at their convenience.
The mediums used for this knowledge transfer are web based VoIP, telephony, video conferencing, web conferencing, emails and audiocassettes, as in older times. Different types of distance education courses include correspondence through regular email, synchronous or asynchronous courses through the internet, tele-course/broadcast and pocket PC training, all having their own styles.
Correspondence is very important in any type of distance learning, which is usually done through regular email, synchronous, or asynchronous courses through the internet, tele-course/broadcast, and pocket pc training. Thus, the IT networks have contributed a lot in reforming the education sector, and it will continue to do so in the future as well.
