Outstanding Performance Fleet Managers Use Mobile GPS

By Todd Cavanaugh

As a fleet manager, no matter how large or small your fleet, you need to understand how mobile GPS can help you protect your drivers and the bottom line. Your drivers will appreciate your help in making them more efficient and productive. Your boss will appreciate the savings you will deliver to the company's bottom line. And it all resides in a small device attached to the steering column of each vehicle in the fleet.

Not only can you track the location of each vehicle, you can also analyze the efficiency of the routes the drivers choose to reach each destination with a mobile GPS system. You can then advise drivers, with the help of your mobile GPS system, about more fuel-efficient, more direct or faster routes. You can even use the system to alert drivers to traffic congestion ahead and provide directions for a detour that will save time. The system will also monitor bad or unsafe driving habits so your drivers can self-correct before you need to become involved.

Have you wondered why Truck 36 seems to take longer to reach local destinations than other trucks and drivers? With mobile GPS in the truck, you can prove that the drivers are taking the longest possible route to each destination and stopping at home for a very long lunch.

Or perhaps you think several of the trucks are using too much fuel for the miles they are putting on the odometer. Mobile GPS in the truck would tell you that they are meeting in the parking lot of an empty warehouse for card games every afternoon, leaving the trucks idling so nobody will know.

Mobile GPS will certainly provide all the ammunition you need to prove that you have a few slackers on your team or that your vehicles are being used after hours by some enterprising drivers. But there are also many positive results you can achieve with this technology. For example, by monitoring routes taken by your drivers, you can help them identify more fuel-efficient or faster routes. Mobile GPS tracking will reduce fuel use and cost, reduce carbon emissions, and increase productivity of these drivers.

Mobile GPS systems also provide exactly the kind of reports and information fleet managers need at the end of the run, the end of the day or at any time reports must be prepared. Instead of checking odometers and repair records in the garage until midnight, your mobile GPS system has all the data readily available on your computer, and you will probably get the work done and still get home for dinner with the family. You can also extend the life of the vehicles, protect your vehicles and your drivers from theft or hijacking, and even keep sensitive cargo moving in any conditions to arrive on schedule.

Think how much time you could save with a mobile GPS system if you had the following problem: You have 22 trucks in Florida, loading oranges for delivery to most of the East Coast. But most of the East Coast is suffering from a deep freeze. The problem is that your customers need oranges to meet the needs of their customers. You need to move those trucks to make room for the 30 that are due to load tomorrow to supply the rest of the south. Only 8 of the 22 trucks have heated trailers, however. You need to manage the 22 trucks in a way that runs the heated trailers directly to waiting customers, even if they deliver only partial orders at first. Then you need to find ways to keep the 22 trucks moving toward their destinations while also keeping them in areas where the temperatures are above freezing. Then when the cold moves out, you need to get the rest of the trucks in quickly to deliver the balance of each customer's orders. If you pull this off, you will be the company hero. With the right mobile GPS system, you'll have the job done in a matter of hours!

Mobile GPS in every vehicle in your fleet will make your job easier and it will make you more successful. You will be able to assist and protect your drivers, achieve maximum efficiencies and productivity, and make both your boss and your customers very happy. Then, as the frosting on the cake, you will be able to do the fun part of your job instead of so much paperwork, and get it all done faster. When you add it all up, mobile GPS makes perfect sense.
