The newest generation of phones are the smart phones. These sometimes expensive cell phones are considered as big of an advancement as cell phones were to landlines. These smart phones have revolutionized the way we run business, run our lives and influence how we interact with the world at large.
I will first give a brief summary of what a smart phone is. A smart phone is an advanced cell phone that has the capabilities of a PDA or small laptop that fits in your pocket and has a much longer battery life. The smart phone can usually operate multiple functions at once, called applications. These applications can do things from making reservations at restaurants to video chatting with your friends to giving your laptop 3G internet access no matter where you are in the world.
Pros: Smart phones can act as an mp3 player, I know personally I never have to carry around my mp3 player anymore as I can just carry around my smart phone and use it in the car, or when walking or whenever. The amount of storage can now go to 32GB for the iphone 3gs which is an incredible amount of data for videos or mp3 files or pictures.
Also the touchscreen and motion sensing applications that can be run on these smart phones can be unique and intuitive allowing for an ease of use that easily surpasses any previous generation of phone on the market.
Cons: Since these smart phones have large brightly lit screens they often have horrible battery lives. My smart phone lasts about a day but it is not such a bad thing as I can always charge it on my way to work or charge it while I sleep. My only concern is that if I forget once I don't have a phone for an entire day!
The biggest con of owning a smart phone is the sometimes outrageous monthly fee. You can end up spending over 100 dollars a month which ends up being 1200 dollars a year on your phone service! This is on top of the 200-400 dollar price range that they typically require when you first buy the phone as well.
When you look over these things in review you should really try to determine why exactly you want this smart phone, and whether or not you need this smart phone to be happy. If it is mainly used for entertainment purposes you should compare the costs to other entertainment things. If you use it to look cool, think about the clothing you could buy with that money. If you want to use it for business however, I strongly suggest you immediately buy one as they are invaluable tools to running your business on the go.
Looking over all of the pros and cons to summarize you should figure out if you have the extra money to spend, if you want it to consume your personal life or expand it, do you really need the extra features or do you just want it to look cool.
