Aquapac Waterproof Headphones: A Review

By Charlie Smith

There has always been a place for music in the human civilization since time immemorial. It has served a number of purposes ranging from relaxation, entertainment to simply fighting boredom or passing time. For whatever reason, people always try to add music to their daily activities. There is no longer a necessity for people to go to concerts or use their elaborate sound systems at home to quench their thirst for music. Our technological evolution has made it possible for us to enjoy music wherever we may be from the old portable radio, walkman and portable CD players to the more modern iPod.

The iPod is often used by people to listen to music while their on the road or even when they are exercising. There is no doubt that a good inspirational tune could give you a lift of energy while working out, having a long travel on the road or in a flight. At present, with the advent of waterproof cases and headphones, it is even possible to listen to your portable music devices even when swimming or underwater. The makers of Aquapac waterproof headphones had just those purposes in mind.

The Makers. These headphones are made by a company called Aquapac. It is based in London, England and has been in the business of making high quality waterproof protective cases for the past 27 years. Their product-line includes dry bags, camera cases, cellphone cases, iPod cases and the recent waterproof headphones.

From the name itself, Aquapac waterproof headphones are waterproof, with an in-the-ear design. It comes with a standard 3.5mm plug and is designed to produce great sound whether above or below the waterline. It has been tested to withstand a depth of 10m/32 ft. but are said not to be suitable for use at a depth greater than 10ft/3m at which case, the pressure is known to cause hearing impairment.

The headphones are highly submersible and can be submerged for depths of 5m in duration of 30 minutes. Its nickel-plated connector is rustproof and compatible with any music player with a standard headphone output such as portable CD players and iPods. An extra pair of ear buds and a headphone buoy for storage purposes also accompanies it when it is not being used. These headphones are perfect for those persons who are active water sports lovers such as swimmers, snorkeling aficionados and boat lovers.

The Performance. The headphones have been tested to hold out even on depths of up to 10m/32ft. but are apparently unsuited for depths exceeding 10ft/3m as hearing impairment from water pressure in these levels are very likely to occur. It is submersible and capable of submersion for a depth of 5m for up to 30 minutes.

These headphones are not designed to be placed underwater by itself without being placed in the ear to protect them. Doing so will ruin the sound although it is not entirely impossible to hear. However, a quick pat with a dry cloth or towel will restore its normal audio.

In all, people who want to use their music players while in the water would find the Aquapac waterproof headphones very useful. It is indeed another extra step to achieving the portability and convenience of listening to our favorite tunes whenever and wherever we wish. We should expect to see a lot more improvement as to these kinds of devices in the future.
